Register B in the Danish Warmblood Studbook

The Danish Warmblood (DWB) Main Studbook consists of two sections: Register A and Register B. Register B provides a pathway for horses that meet the basic breeding requirements but do not yet qualify for direct entry into Register A. It ensures that valuable bloodlines can be included in the breeding programme while maintaining the long-term breeding objectives of the studbook.

When is a horse registered in Register B?

A foal will be entered into Register B in the following situations:

Progeny by provisionally approved stallions

Foals by stallions that have been granted provisional approval but have not yet completed the required performance test when the passport is issued are registered in Register B.
If the stallion later passes the required performance test or achieves competition results that fulfil the Danish Warmblood performance requirements, the horse can be transferred to Register A and issued with a new passport.

One parent registered outside Danish Warmblood

A foal may also be registered in Register B when:

• one parent is entered in the Danish Warmblood Main Studbook – Register A, and

• the other parent is entered in the Main Studbook of a Warmblood studbook that is not included on the Danish Warmblood list of directly approved studbooks.

Crosses with recognised breeds

Register B also accommodates certain planned outcrosses. A foal may be registered if one parent is entered in Danish Warmblood Register A and the other belongs to an Iberian (P.R.E, Lusitano etc.) or another recognized Warmblood breed and is approved within its own studbook.
Applications involving colour-breeding studbooks are assessed individually.

Crosses with pony breeds and cold-blooded breeds are not accepted. In exceptional circumstances, the Danish Warmblood Breeding Committee may grant an exemption.

How can a Register B family progress?

Register B is designed to allow progression into the main breeding population through proven mare quality.
When a Register B mare is presented for studbook inspection and receives an overall score of 8.0 or higher, her future progeny become eligible for registration in Register A.
If the mare receives an overall score below 8.0, her future progeny will remain eligible for Register B.
Colts and stallions originating from Register B are not eligible for stallion approval.

What can Register B horses do?

Register B horses have access to almost all Danish Warmblood activities and competitions. They may participate in:

• Foal Shows, including Elite Foal Shows

• Two-Year-Old Shows, including Elite Two-Year-Old Shows

• Mare and Gelding Inspections

• Suitability Tests

• Young Horse Championships

• Amateur Cup competitions

• FEI/WBFSH World Breeding Championships for Young Horses

• They are also eligible for Honorary Competition medals for high performance in sport

However, Register B horses are not eligible for:

• selection for the Elite Mare Show as three-year-olds and older,

• Danish Warmblood breeders medals

• stallion approval (despensation can be granted in very special cases)

Basic registration requirements

To qualify for Register B:

• one parent must be entered in the Danish Warmblood Main Studbook – Register A;

• a complete pedigree must be documented for three generations on the dam's side and four generations on the sire's side.

Register A and Register B

Register A is the principal section of the Danish Warmblood Main Studbook and includes horses with fully recognised pedigrees that meet all studbook requirements.
Register B is also part of the Main Studbook. It provides a structured route for horses that fulfil the basic pedigree requirements but require additional mare performance before future generations can advance to Register A.
Register B status is clearly indicated in both the Danish Warmblood database and the horse's passport. When a horse is transferred from Register B to Register A, a new passport is issued.

The Danish Warmblood Breeding Committee reserves the right to grant exemptions in exceptional circumstances where this is considered beneficial for the breed.
