WBFSH 30th Year Anniversary17-05-2024 - 10:30

The World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) is the independent and international umbrella organisation of studbooks – this year celebrating its 30th year anniversary

1994 The WBFSH was officially founded in Berlin (GER) with 24 studbook members, and Danish Warmblood was part of the organisation from the very beginning. In November 1994, Gert-Jan van Muijen (NED) was elected to be the first President of the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH). During his mandate and alongside Vice Presidents François Clos (FRA) and Horst Ense (GER), the board had to structure the Federation to ensure it was satisfactory for the studbook members, international bodies such as the FEI, and also the European Economic Community (EEC). This had to be agreeable on all matters concerning sport horse breeding rules and regulations in connection with general international breeding policies.

It was not an easy political task. Horse breeding activity was increasing, as was the interest from new members wanting to join the Federation. Former members were very keen to keep their leadership, which meant the process needed managing efficiently and smoothly.

In 1995, the first Jumping World Breeding Championships for Young Horses took place in Lanaken (BEL), hosted by Studbook Zangersheide, The Jumping Championships still take place here to this day. In 1997, a pilot project for the World Breeding Championships of Young Dressage Horses took place in Verden (GER). Since 1999, the Dressage World Breeding Championships for Young Horses have taken place annually.

Since its inception in 2000 the World Breeding Eventing Championship for Young Horses has taken place at the Haras National in Le Lion d’Angers (FRA) on the Domaine de l'Isle Briand. The grounds of the Haras National today span about 160 hectares and the cross country course is spectacular, characterised by the uniquely themed obstacles.

In 1999 Jan Pedersen, chairman of Danish Warmblood was elected as the next WBFSH president, a position into which he has been re-elected ever since. At the same time, HRH Princess Benedikte of Denmark became the next Parton of the WBFSH, and her support of the federation continues to this day.
